PERSIAN GULF SECURITY: THE EU PERSPECTIVE
Author: Christian Ilcus
ABSTRACT
This study explores the intricate security dynamics of the Persian Gulf region, examining the geopo-litical interactions among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Iran, Iraq, and external powers including the EU, Turkey, China, India, the US, and Russia. Through comprehensive analysis, it highlights the multifaceted nature of regional security, driven by economic interests, historical rivalries, and the impact of global geopolitical shifts. The findings reveal that effective multilateral cooperation, sustainable economic practices, and proactive diplo-matic engagement are critical to achieving long-lasting stability in the region. We ask: How do the security con-cerns of the GCC states influence their foreign policy toward Iran and Iraq? What role do external powers such as the US, Russia, and China play in shaping the economic and security landscape of the Persian Gulf? To what extent does regional cooperation (or lack thereof) affect the efficacy of counter-terrorism efforts among Gulf states? What strategies can be employed to enhance diplomatic relations and reduce tensions among competing regional powers? The security dynamics of the Persian Gulf are characterized by a complex interplay of histori-cal animosities and economic dependencies, particularly in energy resources. The influence of external powers exacerbates regional rivalries but also provides opportunities for cooperation, particularly in counter-terrorism and trade. Effective policies addressing shared threats, like terrorism, require multilateral frameworks that priori-tize collaborative approaches over unilateral actions. Economic diversification is essential for reducing the Gulf states’ vulnerability to oil price fluctuations and enhancing their geopolitical clout. The Persian Gulf security environment is shaped by a blend of regional aspirations and global interests, necessitating a multifaceted ap-proach to conflict resolution and cooperation. The research underscores the importance of fostering dialogue and building trust among regional actors while engaging with major global powers to mitigate tensions. Only through comprehensive strategies that integrate security, economic development, and cultural understanding can the Per-sian Gulf region hope to achieve lasting peace and stability in an increasingly interconnected world.
