STRENGTHENING DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Using mainly secondary sources for this exercise, this study examines the challenges facing democratic institutions and how such challenges could be addressed for good governance and sustainable development. In the process, the concept and phrases of democracy, democratic institutions, good governance and sustainable development are articulated to demonstrate why they matter in Nigeria’s political journey.

It is argued that the weakness of democratic institutions deprives developing countries such as Nigeria the much-needed productive capacities for economic growth and sustainable development. It is posited that strengthening democratic institutions involves building robust and independent institutions, promoting citizen engagement, and fostering a culture of accountability. Thus, it requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the structural and systematic weaknesses, which have hindered Nigeria’s development. By examining the challenges and opportunities for strengthening institutions in Nigeria, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing calls not only to strengthen institutions but also to promote good governance for sustainable development in the country.

The study is concluded on the note, among others, that addressing the major weaknesses of the institutions would enhance transparency, accountability, good governance and inclusive growth, which would, in turn, ensure that Nigeria’s political, social and economic development are sustainable.
